Dumsile Thwala

Dumsile Thwala is an Admin Officer and is responsible for Youth, Sports and Recreation activities.

The municipality has recognized the national importance of the Youth, Women and Disabled person's days during its term of office. The staging of the Mayoral cup on a yearly basis whereby all local municipalities (Ulundi, uPhongolo, Nongoma, eDumbe and AbaQulusi) are competing with a view to selecting players for participating in the Inter-District Games has resulted in the selection of talented players in various national teams.

The Youth Capacity Building Workshop was held on 18 July 2005 and the Youth was capacitated on the Local Government Acts and their involvement in Local Government Processes.

The birth of the Zululand District Municipality Annual 56km marathon which is run from two towns (Nongoma to Ulundi interchangeably) and has been staged in cooperation with the Nongoma Athletics Club and the KwaZulu-Natal Athletics. This marathon attracted +/- 300 athletes from all over the country. This has been a drawcard for athletes who are preparing themselves for the comrade's marathon.

Achievements:

  • The approval of the Games Conceptual Framework, a mechanism with that strives to revive the sporting spirit and culture among the youth, which gave birth to the Mayoral Cup Games.
  • The establishment of a District Sports Forum (Sports Council).
  • Managed to secure the Approval of the Zululand District Municipality Youth Development Plan.
  • The Gender section managed to establish a Gender Forum, which is a representative of all women from local municipalities.
  • Held a Gender Workshop with the aim of developing a Gender Policy to deal with issues like poverty alleviation, education, leadership, health, welfare and safety, land and agriculture, economy, politics and decision- making.
  • This section recognises and celebrated the month of August as the Women's Month and last year held a successful Women's Summit in Ulundi.
  • The opening of the Sivananda Princess Mandisi Health Care Centre situated in B North at Ulundi and which started operating in May last year.
