"The road in and out of Ulundi is one of the most dangerous in the country. In 2006 there were 400 accidents that killed 208 people on a 5km stretch of the R34 between Eshowe and Melmoth. Road counts and research undertaken by the Zululand District Municipality showed (conservatively) that more than 30 000 people and about 6000 government cars travel in and out of Ulundi each month. The high cost of fuel and driving time in excess of three hours from Pietermaritzburg to Ulundi makes air travel is safest and fastest option. As Mayor of the district, I will vigorously encourage the people of Zululand to use the flight service. I appeal to you to promote the daily flights and work hand-in-hand with our preferred airline, Federal Air and our airport consultants, Planning Resources Africa to make these flights viable and sustainable."

According to Statistics South Africa, during the period 2001 - 2006, Road Traffic Accident deaths accounted for 99.8% of all transport accident deaths in South Africa. None of the air transport deaths involved commercial airlines.
